What Is Inner Silence During Meditation? A Heartfulness Perspective
A sister shared this question with me from a WhatsApp group:
“During meditation, or sometimes after meditation, I experience a condition in which there seems to be no action or reaction of thoughts—there is only a sense of feeling. Would this also be called silence?
Even while we are awake and engaged in ordinary life, we may become inwardly quiet while activities continue around us. If the mind becomes free from thoughts, can that state be called silence?
There seems to be some confusion about what exactly the state of silence is. Kindly explain it in detail.”
Dear Sister, Prakriti Pranam.
Your question is a very meaningful one.
According to the Heartfulness approach, the answer is: “Yes, but with an important distinction.”
When, during meditation, the action and reaction of thoughts settle down and only the inner condition remains to be felt, this may be understood as a state of inner stillness or inner silence.
Silence should not be understood merely as a condition in which “there is not a single thought in the mind.” Silence is subtler and deeper than simple thoughtlessness.
As taught in Heartfulness meditation, we begin with a subtle thought—the idea that the Source of Divine Light is present within the heart. The practitioner is not expected to keep repeating this thought mechanically. Gradually, one moves from thought to feeling.
Therefore, the state you have described—
“There is no mental action or reaction; only the inner condition is being felt”—
is a very natural meditative state from the Heartfulness perspective.
Here, the mind is not analysing. It is not trying to label the condition, define it, or create a story around it. It is simply receiving and experiencing it.
It would therefore be more precise to describe this as inner stillness arising in the direction of silence.
However, there is another subtle point.
As long as there remains a clear awareness that, “I am feeling this condition,” an awareness of the feeling is still present.
Thus, silence may deepen progressively—from the quietening of thoughts, to feeling, to subtler states in which even the sense of being the experiencer may gradually become less prominent.
May Mother Nature always be your support.
