“When the Climate Weakens, So Does the Grain” – A Reflection by Veerji

We often worry that climate change will take away our lands, our rivers, our air.

But I think — before it takes away the visible, it begins by weakening the invisible.

A new global study warns: climate change is not just heating the Earth,

It is silently stripping the nutrition from our food.

Wheat, rice, lentils, vegetables — they may still grow.

They may still look the same.

But I think — inside, something vital is being lost.

Iron, zinc, protein, and key nutrients are diminishing from our daily food — slowly, invisibly, tragically.

This is not just about crops. It is about children.

The report shows that regions already facing hunger — South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa —

Will be hit hardest.

More than 1 billion people may face serious health risks due to falling food quality.

Even where food quantity remains, food dignity is vanishing.

And I think — we’re not just seeing a nutrition crisis.

We are witnessing a breakdown of nature’s generosity.

When the air is too hot, the soil too dry, and the water too uncertain —

Even the seed begins to suffer.

And when the seed suffers, the soul of society is shaken.

How does this happen?

Rising carbon dioxide levels change how plants grow.

Crops mature faster, but take in fewer minerals from the soil.

The result: weaker grains, duller vegetables, fragile harvests.

This means that even the food we eat with folded hands,

the food we place before our gods —

is losing its prasad-like purity.

I think this is not just a nutritional issue.

It is a spiritual signal.

So what can we do?

Shift to diverse, climate-resilient crops.

Protect traditional farming systems that honor the land.

Reduce greenhouse gases not just to save icecaps,

but to restore the strength of the seed.

Support community nutrition programs before it’s too late.

Because the battle for climate is also a battle for thali, tiffin, and temple offering.

When I meditate on the farmers of India —

I see their hands weathered, yet faithful.

They have fed generations.

But now, they too are feeding uncertainty.

I think — they deserve better.

And so do we.

I think —

“If the Earth loses its balance, the food loses its blessing.”

“If the climate is sick, our bodies cannot stay well.”

“If the seed is hollow, the future cannot be whole.”

Let us rise not just to eat,

But to nurture the Earth that nourishes us.

Let every act of planting, preserving, and protecting —

become a sacred offering to the soil.

Prakruti Pranam.
