“When the Glacier Melts, the Ground Remembers” – A Reflection by Veerji

We often think of glaciers as distant, frozen giants.

Silent, still, far away.

But I think — every drop that melts from them flows straight into our lives.

A recent study reminds us of a quiet connection many have forgotten:

Glaciers and groundwater are deeply linked.

As mountain ice melts under a warming climate, it doesn’t just feed rivers —

It seeps downward, deep into the veins of the Earth, nourishing groundwater reserves.

And I think — that tells a deeper story.

What falls from the heights finds refuge in the depths.

Water remembers. And it reappears.

The snow that falls on a mountaintop may take decades, even centuries,

to show up in a well in the valley.

But when it does,

I think it carries not just moisture — it carries memory.

This is the mystery of the hydrologic cycle —

One of Nature’s most sacred circulations.

Where nothing is wasted,

Nothing is truly lost,

Only transformed and transferred.

And yet today, this balance is trembling.

The problem is not just melting glaciers — it is our forgetting.

We have pumped groundwater without patience,

Blocked the natural recharge with concrete and carelessness.

And now, with glaciers vanishing faster than ever,

The future of aquifers — those deep water banks we all depend on — is uncertain.

This study shows that as glaciers shrink,

some aquifers may initially be replenished.

But I think — that is borrowed time.

Because once the ice is gone,

the recharge stops.

And then, even the Earth’s deep wells begin to run dry.

So what should we remember?

That glaciers are not just tourism spots.

They are guardians of groundwater.

That groundwater is not infinite.

It is a gift — slowly made, easily lost.

That mountain and plain, peak and pore,

are part of one water body.

I think we must start treating every snowflake as sacred,

Every spring as spiritual,

Every drop of groundwater as ancient treasure.

When I meditate, I often visualize the Himalayas melting —

Not in fear, but in humility.

Their tears become rivers.

Their silence becomes flow.

And their melting… becomes our mirror.

I think —

“The water that disappears from the glacier,

Is the same water that reappears in your cup.”

Let us walk gently,

Pump wisely,

And pray for every frozen drop —

Because one day, it becomes our own reflection.

Prakruti Pranam.
