“Every Flight We Take Leaves a Footprint in the Sky” – A Reflection by Veerji

The airplane rises with grace,

but I think — its shadow stretches far longer than we see.

A new study shows that air travel contributes to climate change in more ways than carbon emissions alone.

The altitude, the timing, and even the flight route affect how much harm is done.

It turns out: the same plane can either amplify or soften its climate impact —

not just by fuel, but by the path it chooses.

And I think — this truth goes beyond aviation.

It touches the heart of our human journey.

How does flying affect the climate?

We often blame planes for CO₂.

But now we know:

Contrails — those white lines in the sky — trap heat.

Flying at night traps more heat than during the day.

Shorter routes with higher efficiency can reduce emissions by 10–20%, if carefully planned.

I think — even in the sky, intention matters.

Not just where we go,

but how we go.

So what should we reflect on as a flying nation?

India is flying more than ever —

with rising incomes, aspirations, and connectivity.

Airports are expanding. Ticket prices are dropping.

But at what cost?

When we fly from Delhi to Mumbai, or from Bangalore to Goa,

I think — we must pause to ask:

Is there a greener way?

This isn’t about guilt. It’s about guidance.

Can airlines adopt climate-optimal routing as standard, not option?

Can we choose trains over planes for journeys under 800 km, wherever possible?

Can policies encourage low-emission flight corridors and daytime scheduling?

Can frequent flyers offset not just carbon — but consciousness?

Because I think — the climate doesn’t ask how rich we are.

It only responds to how much we release.

In Indian tradition, the sky is not a highway — it is a realm of gods.

Vayu, the wind.

Indra, the cloud-bringer.

Akash, the vast expanse.

We flew once through mantras, not machines.

And now that we touch the clouds with technology,

I think — we must also carry humility with altitude.

In meditation, I imagined the path of an airplane —

not its noise, but its trail.

A slow, invisible heat lingering behind…

like karma.

I think —

“Not every journey harms,

but every journey must be held with care.”

Let us rise, yes.

But not just in height.

Let us rise in awareness.

Prakruti Pranam.
