“Even the Emperor Now Wanders” – A Reflection by Veerji

We believed that the emperor penguin, proud and patient,

returned each year to the same breeding ground — loyal to one frozen place.

But I think — the Earth is shifting beneath even the most ancient instincts.

A new study reveals something surprising:

Emperor penguins are not as site-faithful as once believed.

Many of them change their breeding grounds, sometimes disappearing from one location and reappearing miles away.

Why?

Because the ice is no longer reliable.

Because even the most faithful must adapt when their home becomes uncertain.

I think — this is not just a story about penguins.

It is a reflection of our times.

The map of life is no longer still.

From Himalayan birds to Amazon fish,

from tribal communities to urban slums —

every being is asking:

“Where do I go when my habitat no longer holds me?”

The emperor penguin is a symbol of dignity in extreme cold.

But when the ice melts early, or doesn’t form at all,

even dignity must become nomadic.

And I think — this is a moment of truth.

Stability now requires movement.

What does this mean for us in India?

Think of the climate migrants in coastal Odisha,

the farmers from Bundelkhand leaving cracked lands,

the villagers from the Northeast whose rivers have shifted course.

They too, like the penguin, are not faithless —

They are simply being forced to adapt.

And when species as noble as the emperor penguin begin shifting ground,

I think it is time we stop asking “Why are they moving?”,

and start asking “What are we doing to the world that no one can stay?”

So what should we learn from this silent traveler in white and black?

That climate change is reshaping natural loyalty.

That survival today demands flexibility without fear.

That we must protect not just species, but the conditions that anchor them.

Because I think — true conservation is not just about saving animals.

It is about saving their right to stay still.

In one quiet moment, I visualized an emperor penguin standing alone,

on a thinner sheet of ice,

its wings folded, but its gaze long.

It said nothing.

And yet, I think it asked me,

“If even I must move… when will you stop and listen?”

I think —

“When the faithful begin to drift,

It means the foundation has failed.”

Let us not wait until every species becomes a refugee.

Let us cool the planet, not just with science,

but with sensitivity.

Let us rebuild stillness,

so movement once again becomes a choice, not a cry.

Prakruti Pranam.
